Today’s furnishings and accessories
Mission style furniture
The legend is that “Mission furniture” was first constructed in the Spanish missions of Mexico and the American southwest a few centuries ago, but the style didn’t acquire that name until 1890 in San Francisco. These furnishings reflect the humble lifestyles of poor monks who built these very practical pieces to convey their spiritual reserve. Mission furniture is famous for its straight, clean lines and aversion to excess decoration, although such cut-out designs as copper appliques were occasionally attached. This style was born in the West but widely promoted in the East by the New York designer Joesph McHugh, who was the first to mass produce Mission-style furnishings. The Arts and Crafts movement adopted Mission furniture as a signature style and was very popular from 1890 to 1914, but its emphasis on well-made hand crafted furnishings proved to be too expensive for the average consumer. Oak has always been the preferred wood material for this style of furniture, as it is durable, strong and has a natural beauty which requires no finishing. Either as a collector’s item or as a perfect modernistic decor accent, this type of furniture has grown more and more widespread in recent years.
Audio equipment cabinets
Cabinets designed for audio equipment offer both adequate storage space for your audio equipment, and a primary focal point for the room decor. When considering construction and organization, audio cabinets can be very flexible and can be built of solid wood or wood veneers for the traditional look, or constructed with aluminum or steel for a more modern look. There will be two fundamental design ideas to pick from and those would be making the audio equipment itself be the focal point of the cabinet, or having the cabinet blend in as a normal piece of furniture. As a piece of furniture, it is essential for the color of the cabinet door to match the color scheme of your room. However, if you are more concerned in showcasing the equipment itself, then glass doors are the way to go. An additional choice is art nouveau decor, designer cabinets produced in the shape of a guitar or any other unusual design that reflects your taste and sense of style. Current audio technology has become ever-expanding, so you might need to consider allowing additional shelf space for the newer audio gadgets as they enter the market. Although some people put the speakers inside the cabinet next to the components, most audiophiles choose to keep the speakers at a distance from the components for decent sound separation. However the top of the cabinet is often a good place for smaller speakers. Free-standing audio cabinets aren’t your only option, since there are several models of wall-mounted cabinets, and even cabinets which can be rolled around on wheels.
Coat and hat rack for the front entrance
Coat trees are very helpful pieces of furniture perfect for hanging hats, coats, and umbrellas. Generally coat trees are placed at the entrance to the home serving as useful furniture and as a decor “statement”. The various hooks used for jackets, coats and scarves reach out like the limbs of a tree, and to stop clothes from laying partially on the floor and getting stepped on, coat trees are more often than not around six feet tall. Coat trees can include a hat rack so that hats can be neatly protected and quickly found as soon as it’s time to leave. The hooks that hats are hung from are usually widely spaced so the more fine hats will not be crushed. Keeping the coat tree in a closet is a solution many people have to inadequate room in the entrance. One major advantage to having a coat tree is it allows for outsized, bulky coats or jackets to be stored in a small space. Appropriate hanging of the clothing will keep them from wrinkling or becoming damaged.
